Computer science (CS) is usually thought of as a complex subject best suited for college students. Can classic computer science problems be adapted for elementary students so that young children can engage with them in a deep and motivating way? The Four Color Map Problem was adapted for elementary students to explore. A case study was conducted comparing the approaches used by adult experts, fourth grade advanced, and fourth grade regular math students. I will share the results of the case study and also present other CS problems that can be adapted for K-12 students. A detailed lesson plan will be provided as well as ideas and materials for other lessons.
